A child’s first words don’t usually say much about their future. If they did, there would be a lot of worried parents; monosyllabic burbles of ‘Mum,’ ‘Dad,’ or ‘cat,’ aren’t exactly filled with promise. But in Rory’s case, his first utterances did suggest his path. Realising the need for a first word, but wanting to say two, he opted for ‘Whazzat?’ – an elision of ‘What’s that?’ This was a taste of things to come; to this day he is a voracious hoarder of knowledge – some of it important, much of it trivial.
His quest for knowledge has sent him on a meandering route to self-fulfilment. After finishing school, he picked up a Law degree, an Arts degree, a magazine editorship and publication in various Adelaide street rags, before completing his Honours in Creative Writing. His Honours year proved somewhat of an epiphany, making Rory realise that his true calling lay in the written word. Turning his back on the Law, he set about establishing a freelance writing career. To this day he continues to write and edit for various local and international publications, including Collect Magazine, Place, The Lifted Brow, and SOME/THINGS Magazine.
As a content producer Rory strives to make sites as interesting and informative as they can possibly be. He feels that just as no one wants to read a boring or illogical book, neither do they want to read a dull and ill-informed website. He also thinks it’s important to give each sites a unique and consistent voice – no one likes dealing with split personality disorder.
Though he likes to think of himself as a writing machine – constantly processing swathes of information and churning them into informative and entertaining text – he does, on occasion, stray from the office. When not working, he tragically follows the Portland Trail Blazers, despite the fact he is Australian, has never been to America, and can’t play basketball to save his life. He also like to tap incessantly, to read, and to imagine what it’d be like to go back in time and invent things that have already been invented.
